| This chest is from the era of the stagecoach. It had been passed down through family generations to the present owners. There are no screws in the chest; everything is assembled with antique square nails. When I received the chest it was covered with rust, the internal casework was falling apart, and the bottom was split to the point of being unusable. All of the exterior wood was aged to grey. The handles were gone. I ordered a box of square nails and custom modified them so that they looked like the nails originally used. The exterior was wire-wheeled to remove all rust. In many areas the metal had been completely eaten away, either by rust or by use. Those areas had to be left as they were, but where I could I used small square nails to fasten the skin to the interior casework. The oak on the outside was scraped clean, sanded and finished with numerous coats of Tung Oil. The metal skin was clear-coated with lacquer, as was the inside of the chest. I fabricated a new bottom and made new feet. Finally, I located appropriate leather handles and attached them, with square nails. The fully restored chest is now a decorative storage unit in the client's living room. Phone 360-606-2949...Home...Email...All Projects on One Page...TOP OF THIS PAGE |
