| I built this piece for myself. The title of a pipe smoker’s table is because I didn’t have any other title that fit. It’s designed to have a glass top in order to display the dovetails at the center post. It’s done in walnut and has a clear hand-applied finish. The table is approximately 24 inches high and 13 inches in diameter. I started with a center core of walnut that I milled to a hexagon. On alternate sides I milled in sliding dovetails to accommodate both the legs and the upper arms, for the glass to rest on. On the sides that did NOT receive legs or upper arms I milled an inside radius that generated a flowing line between each of the leg and arm members. The three-dovetail pattern that is visible beneath the glass, as viewed from the top, also appears on the bottom. I find that the most difficult element of a piece is to make it, ultimately, simple. |
