I was contacted by the mother of a graduating high school senior to design and fabricate a hope chest. I originally thought about doing the chest in solid cherry, but I ran across a particularly unique sheet of one-inch thick cherry wood ply stock and decided to use it instead. The corners, the lid edges and the base are solid cherry and are each detailed in some manner for a bit of eye candy. I purchased the overlays from a specialty company and then did some selective cuttings to get them to the configuration that I liked. The overlays embellish the lock and detail the face of the chest base. The finish has both a color added stain and several finish coats of clear lacquer. The dimensions are approximately 24 x 24 x 52 inches.
