| A stylized rendition and recalling of another time for me. As an Officer of the Deck (diesel submarine service, United States Navy) I witnessed the flight of an albatross hundreds of times. I watched them in awesome storms. I never saw one founder. Rarely did one even flex its wings as it glided on air currents within a foot of the ocean surface. In the air they are the definition of grace and strength. The wingspan of this sculpture is 46 inches. From front to back the wings are 5 inches across. I have scraped the wings thin, to the point of translucence. ABOVE, it sits on a bent wire of stainless steel that is embedded in a Walnut base weighted with steel. BELOW, like the wind on the open sea, when I point a fan at the sculpted bird it actually glides on the currents and appears as if flying.
