| I was asked to fabricate a case to hold a small glass vial...a special memento. As in many projects, I’m left to my own devices to derive the end result. In this piece I determined that I’d use small, handcut dovetails. ABOVE: The finished case is approximately 2.5 inches on a side and 5.0 inches tall. It is made from old growth quartersawn White Oak. BELOW LEFT: It was especially difficult because of the fit I wanted to generate, not only side-to-side, but vertically. I didn’t want the vial to be loose in the case. BELOW RIGHT: At the bottom left of the photo, near the base, a small round disc is visible in the wall of the assembled inner case. It’s a rare earth magnet. I placed a corresponding magnet on the inner wall of the outer case wall (that is being assembled, with dovetails showing, above it). I did this on two opposite side walls. The magnets are offset by a half-diameter so there is always a “pull” to keep the case closed. It works magnificently. BOTTOM CENTER: The finished design incorporated two boxes in a slip case format. |
