The wood is Amboyna Burl.

Smells something like cinnamon. VERY aromatic. The finial is Ebony.

Size: 4-1/2 inches in diameter, 4-1/4 inches high. No finish has been applied.

Amboyna is from SE Asia: New Guinea, Thailand, the Philippines, and perhaps other countries. I bought a single piece of this species years ago. It sat in a corner. That often happens. Until I'm ready, the wood waits.

I did a sketch...I think...and put the piece on the lathe. The piece comes to me. This is the result. It is hollow.

The trick was splitting the original piece in a manner that would allow me to get a good grain match between the lid and the base.

It turned out pretty well.
